We’re obsessed with Instagram hashtags. Our data science team pores over Instagram trending hashtags, spotting new topics and examining how trends change over time and in response to events. We want you to benefit from our obsession, so we’ve started a new series of posts dedicated to hashtag analysis. These articles will help you to understand what the Instagram community is talking about and how you can use these trends in your own marketing strategy.
Why are hashtags so important? Because Instagram keeps updating its platform with new features to achieve its goal of combining algorithms and human curation to create a more personalized experience. These change user behavior on Instagram.
The company released the follow hashtag feature in December and introduced hashtag links in bios last month. This represents something of a rebirth of the Instagram hashtag, encouraging users to discover and engage with new content on Instagram within their feed.
Example of the new hashtag link in bio
Matthew Ogle, product manager at Instagram, has said that hashtags are meant to be the key component for identifying interests on Instagram.
According to the recent study by Mention, two-thirds of the postings shared on Instagram use at least one hashtag in the caption. From a user perspective, hashtags are a main component of the communication process on Instagram. People express emotions (#love), opinions (#timesup), support (#marchforourlives) and partnerships (#ad) by using the symbol that might be tiny in size but strong in its meaning. Who of you hasn’t used a hashtag to express the reasons for your post?
For our Instagram trending hashtag analysis series, we don’t want to drown you in data. Instead, we’ll give you a quick overview of each month’s trends and how they compare to previous months. This can help you to develop savvy hashtag usage.
The elaboration of a hashtag strategy is an individual process of trial-and-error. In the end, businesses need to measure what hashtags create awareness, increase engagement or go viral within the community.
So, it’s helpful to understand the landscape of hashtags on Instagram. You can monitor any hashtags with our InfluencerDB platform or check out this post for more on how you can benefit from a thoughtful hashtag strategy.
Future posts will tackle trending hashtags for different categories: travel, beauty, food, sports and fitness, lifestyle and fashion. For our first Instagram trending hashtag analysis, we’ll give you some highlights of the top 100 hashtags overall. So, what was trending in March?
Trending in March 2018
Some hashtags, like #fashion, #instastyle, and #beauty, are almost always trending. The top 20 hashtags on Instagram didn’t change at all between February and March.
|Rank||Hashtag||number of postings|
But some hashtags are popular at certain times of the year, or in response to various current events. Here are some trends we spotted this month.
Travel As The Top Trending Topic
Of course, travel is always a hot topic on Instagram. But even among constantly trending hashtags, travel has taken the lead this month. Compared to the top trending hashtags of February, the number of travel-related hashtags increased in March. In this context, one of the top hashtags is #travel. Interestingly, there were over 945,000 postings that used country and city hashtags from Persian Gulf countries (for instance, الكويت is Kuwait) while all other locations hashtags from around the world like #miami, #paris, #indonesia add up to over 757,000 postings.

In a broader sense, the often used hashtags #summer and #nature can be associated with traveling as well.
Instagrammers shared than 1.8 million content pieces with travel-related hashtags during March. It seems like people are ready for spring vacations!
Trending Hashtags related to events
In February, #valentinesday was a top hashtag. This is a great example of how brands can benefit from campaigns based on trending topics associated with holidays and other events. March doesn’t have a significant event-related hashtag. But we did notice a drop of the hashtag #sale as it was used in more than 126,000 postings in February (162,000 in January) but only in 87,000 postings in March.
Additionally, #2018 was frequently used in January, as was the resolution-oriented #fitfam, but the hype around getting fit in new year has now died down. #fitfam dropped off the list in February and #2018 was gone by March.
Most striking trending hashtags
We spotted some unique hashtags among more general hashtags like #love, #fashion, #ootd and #fitness. We identified three hashtags that stand out. One popular hashtag was #hijab, that might be linked to the many postings that also include hashtags with Persian Gulf countries.

March was also a big month for #wedding, and #nike was the only brand hashtag in the top 100 trending hashtags.
